I am home early from work again to "rest." Yesterday I actually did sleep for two hours, today... well, we'll see. I have been sick since last Thursday, so today I finally went to the doctor for a strep test just to be sure I am not spreading nasty germs
around everywhere I go. Sure enough, no strep, just some upper-
respiratory sickness. So, back to work I went, spreading germs freely.
Since I am home now, I thought I would catch up a bit on what we have done for the past week. Because of being sick, Merrick's birthday was pretty low-key.
We went out to sushi dinner, opened presents, and watch "The Office." It was nice to just have a quiet evening for the two of us, so I don't think you will hear us complaining. We did have a bit of excitement at dinner... While opening presents, he forgot there was a tea light on the table, and set a gift box
on top of the candle. Well, it promptly caught fire, and caused a lot of smoke. He was able to blow out the flame (a treat since he didn't have any other candles) and we set the box outside the restaurant in hopes that people wouldn't notice the distinct fire smell we had caused.
On Friday morning I flew down to spend the weekend with
Kelsie and Alex. It had been 5 years since I had been down there - so it was definitely time for a trip. I had such a great time - we planned nothing, and didn't do much more than that! We just got to hang out.
Kels picked me up on Friday from the airport and we headed back to her house for the afternoon. For dinner on Friday we went to In-N-Out Burger! After we ate, we drove down to the beach to watch the sun set. It was beautiful, but just a little cloudy, so we didn't see much sun-setting-action. We stopped at a cute baby boutique and shopped for a while. I got a really cute thing for Merrick (well, more for the baby, but it is his birthday, so he will open it). I am saving it for this weekend, but once he opens it, I will post a picture!
Kelsie and I rented "Because I Said So" and Alex opted to watch
Seinfeld instead (can't say that I blame the poor guy).
On Saturday, after a very lazy morning, we drove to Beverly Hills. Alex showed us where he will be working and going to school on the UCLA campus in a few gorgeous, old buildings there. We then drove by their first apartment and walked up Rodeo Drive. We got sucked into
Lush - the body store - by a gay man with incredible legs (just for you
Kels), and each bought a few things to pamper ourselves with. It was also student appreciation weekend, so we showed our
ID's (which I carry for just such an occasion) and got free juice boxes and granola bars. We headed down to the Farmer's Market and did a little shopping and enjoyed a strawberry and
nutella crepe. Since it was
Cinco de Mayo, we headed back to Torrance for a dinner of delicious Mexican food.
On Sunday morning we got up before the sun and roosters, and headed to the airport at 4:30 a.m. The flight home was
un-eventful, and I was back in Portland by 9 a.m. We had a very busy day on Sunday - church, lunch with the
fam, shopping in
Woodburn, catching up on old episodes of The Amazing Race, baby class.
The most fun was had while shopping at the outlet stores in
Woodburn. We went to buy Merrick a new pair of shoes, but accidentally detoured to Gap where we found great deals on maternity clothes and baby clothes. There were a few items we just couldn't say no to. My favorite is the "I love daddy"
onsie... Merrick really likes the green striped terry cloth romper.
I have also been meaning to put up a few pictures of our crib and bedding - now that it is set up. We are still far from done with baby's room, but we are getting there. These pictures don't show a very
accurate color, but you get the idea.
Angela came over last night to visit, see the house, have dinner. We had a lot of fun hanging out, since I hadn't really seen her since her birthday in March. She showed up with a gift for the baby... and as you can see, it is perfect! My favorite part is the turtle toy. This child is already well dressed. We are done shopping until after the birth - and I mean it!

Our friends, John and Veronica, were very nice and offered the use of their home for the party. After all the guests had been invited, Veronica invited dad to join them for a small gathering and concert at their home. (This is something they do every once-in-a-while, so he wasn't at all suspicious of the gathering).
About 50 people - friends from dance classes and clubs - were waiting in the Ferenz's home when Bob walked in - boy was he shocked. I think it truly was a surprise!
Along with our Hawaiian theme we tried to make the party "all about Bob." We served Arnold Palmers (iced tea/lemonade), and the dessert table was full of Bob's favorites - including peanut M&Ms, chocolate covered raisins and chocolate covered almond clusters.
I also made three cakes for the occasion - one of which we covered with 50 candles! He had no trouble though, and blew them all out in one try (I think the wind coming in the open window helped).
My belly got a name tag for the evening that read "Bob's first grandchild." It grabbed a lot of attention, and caused the belly to be rubbed many times throughout the night.
